starting issues

car: ford focus 1.4
year: y reg 2001
miles: 44k
issues: won't start just spins. doesn't even attempt to turn over. put it in gear and it will jump forward. thought it might be a jamming issue but its not. the starter spins free.

thoughts?

how often does pinion gear fail on these?

It spins but won't turn over? The engine spinning and turning over are the same thing.

Do you mean the starter spins but doesn't seem to engage the flywheel?

sorry yes. starter spins but doesnt engage flywheel

Starter has had it or there are teeth stripped/worn on the flywheel ring.

if i put it in gear and it grips enough to munch it forward it means the teeth on the flywheel ring are fine?
