Hi there,

I'm interested in getting a motorcycle, although i do not have a license, and have only ridden on the back before.

Could anyone Give me a bit of advice about the basics i'll need to know/have?

Thanks

Jami :)

You'll need to do a theory test, you can do that before your CBT or after it.

Then you need a CBT, that will allow you to ride your own 125cc with L plates for upto 2 years before it runs out.

You can get your own 125cc and ride around on that, or can get a course from a school, and learn on their bike, and do your two practical tests on their bike.

If you're under 21 you can only do the test on a 125cc, after you pass you have a restriction on your license restricting you to a bike with upto 25kw/33bhp.

If you're over 21 you can do your test on a bigger bike, and if you pass you are allowed to ride any bike you can afford to, there are no restrictions on your license.

You obviously need to buy kit such as helmet, clothing, gloves, boots, locks & chains etc.

You'll need to do:

CBT - 1 day - £100-130 (can be had cheaper if bought as part of a DAS
Theory - 1 hour - £30
Module 1 training & test, 2 days, 4 hours per day £500 approx including test fee.
Module 2 training & test, 2 days, 4 hours per day, £315 approx including test fee.

Booster/confidence sessions on a 125/500cc, 4 hours - £120.

Most schools will supply you with the relevant gear/clothing though getting your own boots (these will not be supplied, suitable footwear should be worn) and gloves as it's nice to use your own.

I'd recommend the confidence sessions after your CBT if you don't plan on riding much or at all and just doing it all in one go like I am. The extra time on the bike is useful for skill & confidence.

The Mod 1 & 2 training & test is often reffered to as DAS (Direct Acess Scheme). Mod 1 test is manouvers off road ( there's a video on youtube) and mod 2 is on public roads.

Prices will vary depending on where abouts in the country you are and what's on offer.
