Hey all,

I'm currently having problems boosting Windows. Basically, I turned off my pc via the power button to reset something (it sometimes works best if I do it this way). The copy of Windows is counterfiet.
Then with turning it back on it failed to boot and just went to the black screen with the options of 'start windows normally, safe mode' etc, selecting one of these options would just loop and return back to this screen and windows would not log in.

Afterall, my friend has suggested to me Ubuntu and it sounds very convincing to retrieve all my files and data from my Windows op. system. But I'm wondering what is the likelyhood of this being successful?

Please comment and many thanks!

to retrieve files is very likely as you get to the safemode, repair.... screen, so it looks like you powered down when windows wanted to install an update or was writing something important to one of its files or the registry. making a linux (any version really) live disc will let you see the drive (aslong as it has NTFS support which i think most live discs do)and copy any files you want to another hard drive or memory stick.

Yes, Ubuntu will 'see' all your Windows data.

You just need to download an Ubuntu ISO image and burn it to CD.

Then set your BIOS to boot from CD first ( if it is not already set up this way ).

Boot up the Live CD and grab your files.

Have you tried to rescue your Windows system? Does it boot in Safe Mode? Can you get into Safe Mode and use System Restore to roll the install back to a previous good state?

Great news guys!

Nah, Windows does my load in any of the modes, it just restates back to that screen. What is NTFS by the way and live discs, I'm a complete noon at this lingo!

Cheers

NTFS = New Technology File System. Standard file system used by Windows.
Live Disc = A disc containing a bootable operating system.
