When I start up if a disc is in the machine it doesn't turn on. I've been able to leave discs in before and it works fine. Why is this happening?

When I shut down my computer it says "It is now safe to turn off your computer", again this only started happening yesterday. How do I get rid of this?

1) any disc at all? not just bootable ones etc?

2) spooky, have you made sure all the power connectors are in ok?

Check if there's anything like API/APIC settings in the BIOS, and check in the device manager whether it says ACPI-compatible uni/multiprocessor PC.

1) To try fix this you could change the boot order so your hard drive with windows is the first boot choice.

2) Wasn't the "It is now safe to turn off your computer" a thing that was on windows 95/98? Have never seen it anywhere else. What version of windows is it? Also interested in what the problem for that is.

It does the "now safe" thing when your power supply cant switch itself off.

enable ACPI in the bios, or its something to do with enabling some sort of power management (like F1-POS) off the top of my head

Dont know about the disc in the drive thing, thats really odd
