Im not getting my desktop when im booting up but im able to get to task manager and use explorer.exe to get it fired up. My problem is, i cant figure whats causing it.
Ive done a system restore with no joy.
Im on Vista 32bit btw.

Can you help me with this one

i had this once, ive totally forgotten what was causing it however :P

a full format should stop this happening, as i believe you've just killed your explorer.exe on boot. and youve gotta start it normally

ill have a look around to see if theres a work around, but if not i'd recommend a full format

EDIT: found one possible fix:

1. type "regedit" into the start menus searchbar
2. browse to -> HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE -> Software -> Microsoft -> Windows NT -> CurrentVersion -> Winlogon ->
3. find the key called "Shell"
4. make sure it has explorer.exe in it, if not double click the key and add "explorer.exe"
5. Reboot and try

i dont think UAC can kill a valid windows process.

another thing to check is that it doesnt say "C:\WINDOWS\Config\csrss.exe" after the Explorer.exe in the Shell Key.

as this is usually the handywork of a virus that is stopping the exe from running and instead running another.

hmm.

one more idea

first youve gotta make sure that there is an explorer.exe file in your "C:\Windows" Directory

then make a copy of it, paste it in the same folder and call it "explorer1.exe" or somthing similar (its best to give it a name without "explorer" in it actually)

then go back into regedit and change the shell key so its pointed at your clone of explorer.exe so change it from "explorer.exe" to "clonedexp.exe" or whatever

some known viruses can cause explorer.exe to fail at boot, and therefore have to be started manually. so by creating a clone of it and changing the shell key, it should point to your new exe and bypass any virus thats causing problems

by the way if this works, download yourself an antivirus! :p

Ive run avg antivirus and it found nothing but its booting ok now, god only knows how.

What about not being able to turn user control off, any ideas on that
