Does setting a static DNS (for me on virgin 194.168.4.100 & 194.168.8.100) help with BroadBand performace or is it best to DNS to automatic? Also is DDNS similar to DNS?, as at the moment this is set to 'none' on my Linksys WRT54GL running the tomato FW

It doesn't make any odds, so long as the IPs you set are the same ones that are given out. The only thing that'll make any difference is if the servers are better than the ones you get from DHCP.

DDNS is Dynamic DNS - sites like dyndns.org.

So providers (Virgin) would have more than 2 sets of DNS they use, and some perform better than others?

No, because that would be impossible. Unless there's something wrong with the DNS servers you're using, the easiest answer is to leave will alone.
