Hi Folks, my chum requires a static ip for a new home security system and has just phoned and asked AOL if they can provide one.
Emmm now this where is gets a bit funny???? AOl told him he must contact his computer hardware company - i.e sony as it is a sony laptop and they will provide one.
Now something tell me that aol has spun a load of crap and have no idea what they are on about!
Does not the isp provide a static ip I always thought this was true!
WTF.
The hardware should have nothing to do with it:confused:

That's how you get a static IP on your PC lol not WAN IP.
Ask to speak to a senior analyst and specify static WAN IP. No idea whether they'll do it or not.

They're being stupid, tell him to move to a decent ISP :p

Maybe get a DynDns domain name? Basically you sign up for a DynDns domain name, you then enter the details (username, password, address) into the router and DynDns will track the dynamic IP and update the domain name every time it changes. So rather than using the IP to connect you'd use blablah.dyndns.org

I would try and help the guy chaps

But I would be better of telling my ash tray what to do.
I really don't want to get involved so i told him to speak to AOL again lol.
You know somethings are just not worth the pain.:p

LOL :)

The cleanest solution is as mentioned above, to use DynDns and ideally get a router that has inbuilt support for Dynamic DNS, then it's pretty much plain sailing, however, setting it all up can be quite daunting if you are not Network savvy!

And all joking aside, a lot of mainstream ISP's don't offer Static IP's that easily/readily, some charge, some just don't offer the service.. you unfortunately don't have any automatic right to one either!
