Static IP

From my knowledge, your device will always assign itself that IP when it connects but your router could assign this to another device beforehand. I always do it from the router so I know what each IP address each device is.

Use an IP reservation on the router. You can then either leave the static IP on the device as is or remove it and allow DHCP to set it.

If your router doesn't allow for IP reservations change your DHCP range so the IP can't to allocated to another device.

Using an assignment from the router is the neatest solution. If this isn't workable the next best way is to adjust the DHCP range on the router so you've got a block of IP addresses to use as static addresses.
