Static Protection

So, this Monday I'm expecting my components to be delivered for my new, first ever full build, and since it's all rather expensive stuff I want to make sure that I don't destroy it before I've even started! Therefore, I need to know exactly what I need and how I'm going to prevent static buildup, and the steps I need to take to protect my shiny new components from static electricity. E.g. what sort of surface I should use and what is the best way to ground myself?

Any advice or links to help pages will be greatly appreciated, thanks in advance for the help :D

Most surfaces that arent carpet are ok, the way i do it is to install the power supply unit first, plug it into the mains (the mains is normally earthed).
Leave the power off bit still plugged in, and then just touching the metal sides of the case should remove any static charge.

I also like to touch random tap's and other metal earthed objects throughout the build, also dont wear any shoes so im not insulated by them and electricity can pass right through me, not sure if thats just superstition, but it makes me feel better :p

That might be a bit of a problem, since I got myself a case with a removable motherboard tray to make my job a little easier.

No thats fine, just touch the outer metal case every now and then. You'll probably find the removable mb tray's a godsend too.

The room I'll be working in is carpeted, so would it help to do the job in bare feet? :p

Thanks for the help so far

Nah don't bother. I'd do what the posts above indicate and install the PSU first and leave it plugged in but switched off. We don't need to use an earthing band like the Americans do at home because our top pin is earth.

If you're worried about it touch e.g. a radiator pipe (at the bottom) to discharge yourself.
