Apparently static can cause your system damage when constructing or repairing it. is this true. if so do you have any tips of how to prevent this?

Yes it can. If you leave your computer plugged into the mains (but turned off obviously) it will be grounded, so touching the case should discharge any static you may be carrying. You can also get things like static proof mats but card board does the job too and you can get wrist bands that you wear and clip to your case if you're really paranoid. I bought a wrist band when I first starting messing with my pc but I didn't use it for very long, not really necessary but I suppose you can always get unlucky!

yes its true, but very rarely does it happen if you are carefull.
never used any of the wrist bands or anything. people say to earth yourself with the case too.
pretty much agree with stulid, just be carefull when handling it, and dont go touching components willy nilly or rubbing them on the carpet.

Ok thanks guys. I think I'm going to ground myself with the CASE. LOL depending on the cost of the bands.

i have always found the bands look like they would do more harm than good.
the amount of times when i was at college, one of the students forgot he was clipped to the case, turned to walk off and the case quickly followed. also, they look like they restrict your movement quite a bit too and seem uncomfortable, which, if you are already worried about breaking something, not having total freedom of movement cant be a good thing.
never used one though, but from what i have seen, i wouldnt like to.

ive bult loads and loads of pcs never earthed my self, or worn one of them earth strap things, never had any problems

Whenever I mess with computer components I make sure I'm on laminate floor and near a radiator just for a quick touch of a copper pipe. Never had any problems that way.

Also stay off carpet if your handling your components.

You lot obviously never do power-slides on your knees on the carpet whilst impatiently waiting for a delivery.

That usually happens when running tot he front door before the delivery driver scarpers :D

I just keep the case plugged in but switched off at the wall. I do have the full anti-static kit as well though!
