Stating a reason for leaving a previous job on an Application form

Quick question regarding application forms.

I am currently applying for jobs and graduate schemes as I am graduating in June. The applications all naturally ask for previous employment but one or two of them ask for reasons for leaving.

My problem is that one job I left due to irreconcilable differences with the MD of the company. I was a bar and restaurant manager and while I was covering a collegues holiday at another venue the MD fired all my staff and told me to hire more on my return. I fought the decision claiming it was a breach of contract for him to remove my staff like that. He refused, I resigned, my staff sued and won.

But how should I word this on an application form? Is it ok for me simply to state Irreconsilable differences on my application form, or will this reflect badly on me? Obviously dont want to lie as if they contact the company in question then all will be revealed.

Any suggestions?

I don't mean to ask the obvious but couldn't you just say that the MD broke the contract and from that point on your position was untenable? From a quick read that seems to be a reasonable approximation of what happened.

He didn’t really break my contract but I can see where you are going with this. I was loyal to my staff and had spent 18 months putting together a good team. When they were all dismissed for no good reason I was unable to agree with the MD as to this course of action and had no option but to resign.

The fact that it was the best decision I ever made is irrelevant.

I just hope that it doesnt come across that I will resign at the first sign of a disagreement with prospective management. If questioned in an interview I would be able to explain my reasons.
