I bought a factory refurbished head unit for my car yesterday, and when I installed it, I found out its completely dead. The connections are fine, ISO behind the unit and using the adapter supplied with the head unit. My old one works fine.

My question is, when I go back to the store later do I have the right to demand refund/replacement? Im unsure because I knew it was factory refurbished and not brand new. It came with a 9 month guarantee.

Do I stick to my guns and demand refund/replacement or just let them send it back to manufacturer for repair, seems wrong though because surely you cannot sell goods that are not even working.

Any comments/input would be greatly appreciated.

Assuming that nothing you've done on installation has caused the fault, then personally, I would not accept a repair under those circumstances.

The fact that the unit is a refurb does not mean you have no rights, but they are a bit curtailed. Basically, you can't complain about anything you would expect from a refurb, or that was pointed out to you, or that you ought to have noticed, when the unit was sold. If, for instance, there was a minor mark on the faceplate and you were told that was why it was being discounted, you can't then complain about that mark.

Essentially, if goods aren't new, you can't expect the standards you would have new goods, but you CAN expect the goods to live up to a reasonable expectation of goods as they were sold. A refurb unit should still work faultlessly, unless you were notified of a problem prior to purchase.

By all means, be aware of your rights and what you can and can't insist on, but I strongly advise you to avoid any mention of Sale of Goods Act if you can. Most stores will be reasonable in this kind of situation, and standing on your rights (unless you have to) will just put their backs up. Sugar usually works better than vinegar.

But also be prepared for them to refuse an immediate refund. They may well wish to investigate the failure. Anyone that works in a business like this will tell you that a percentage of customers are idiots, and will do totally numpty things. Not everyone, for instance, realises what polarity means. So if they open the unit up and it turns out the idiot diode is blown, it may well be a fair assumption on their part that you blew it.

In short, then, IF the unit was faulty on supply, then you have a right to require a refund or a replacement. But note, you can't require them to replace a refurb unit with a brand new one.

But IF the unit was damaged by faulty installation, you may well get a repair bill. Or maybe not. It depends on the company and whether they're prepared to write that off to customer relations. Some will, many won't.

Thanks for the replies.

The connections can only be configured in 1 formation, ie. the male parts can only connect to 1 female part, monogamus electrics if you wish. And I reconnected the old unit and this still works fine so im assuming that the fault is with the headunit.

I wasnt going to go in all guns blazing :p , just wanted to be sure of my rights if I had to bring them out at some point :D
