EDIT: my title should read upgrade to 939 or C2D

My parents motherboard seems to be on the way out at the moment so I have a dilema on how to fix it.

I have an opteron 146 and PCI-e card (X1800XL) lying around but 939 motherboards seem to be in scarce supply other than the bay just now. DDR memory also seems extortionately priced?? and these are the only bits that I would need at a cost of about £60-£80 depending on memory.

I could go the 775 route but I would need a MB/CPU/RAM and I reckon I could get these for about £130 minimum.

So what do you think. The computer is only really used for emails/internet/my dads football manager. There would be quite a difference in speed between a C2D and my opteron right? But then again I wouldn't need to bother selling my spare parts :)

Thoughts please.

personally i would go the core 2 route, as it should make any future repairs easier as parts are easier to source, the c2x will be faster in multi-threaded applications and when multitasking to some extent.

the c2x will be significantly faster in multithreaded applications especially after it has been OCed.

c2x means either c2d or c2q, dependign on what you want

yeah i think going to convince the folks C2D is the more sensible route :)

that said anybody want to spec me a CPU/MD/RAM for as little as possible. Possibly need a PSU as well as I think it is just a 300W generic one in the computer just now.

thanls

Came up with the following, could drop to 1gb of memory, but if ya dads running footy manager with an x1800 he should have 2gb :D

Antec Basic 350W PSU £21.99 (£25.84)

OcUK Value IP35-S Intel P35 (Socket 775) PCI-Express DDR2 Motherboard £49.99 (£58.74)

Intel Core 2 Duo E2140 "LGA775 Conroe" 1.60GHz (800FSB) - Retail £38.99 (£45.81)

OcUK 2GB (2x1GB) PC2-6400C5 800MHz DDR2 Dual Channel Kit £23.99
(£28.19)

Sub Total : £134.96
Shipping : £8.95
VAT : £25.18
Total : £169.09

None of the uses for the PC would need a C2D, 939 is still available new but you have to look around, 1 Gb would be enough memory for an xp system with that use

fair point but it is a major pain to try and find 939 when they are in stock :(.

my parents say they trust me so C2D it is. Thanks for the spec that should give me something to work around.

always had AMD (currently opty 185) so be nice to experiment with Intel for a change :)
