Staying in a Riad

Early stages of planning a trip in Morocco, looking at accommodation and instead of the normal hotels, I’m thinking of staying at a Riad. What are the main differences and any do and don’t?

I guess it’s more like a English BnB or Japanese Ryokan stay?
