Hey all, purchased some fresh steak on wednesday, but due to reasons unforseen have only just got around to cooking it, it has a "Use by" date of 5th, so im out by about 3 hours, I just wonder if this will be ok to use. Instead of being red like normal, it is patchy red, with darker browny areas... Will it be ok to eat? Thanks!

personaly i would eat it, but then again i like my steaks well cooked. If you like yours rare, then im not sure how safe it would be.

I like it cooked well, will be giving it 10 mins per side to make sure, it says 5 - 7 so that should be good, just want to make sure as it seems bruised or such and I do not know if that is ok!

It smells slightly stronger than if I had opend it when I first got it, but not bad.

I know, but I want to make 100% I do not die... I have no free time to be ill!

Id rather die than ruin a perfectly good steak! If its supermarket meat then its prob been slaughtered, butchered, packed, sold, and eated way before a proper butcher would have even finished hanging it!

Would be fine for a while yet, have eaten steak like two/three weeks after its sell by date, Butchers hang steak for ages to get it well hung, gives it that dark colour, really nice meat.

Feed a bit to your dog/cat/grandmother and see if it has any side effects eg death... and if it doesnt then you know its safe hehehe :)

Jesus wept.

If you're hungry, just eat some coal. It'll taste the same. Give the steak to some passing tramp, hopefully they'll like rare :D

Probably a bit late, but steak is fine to cook well past the dates they show (obviously i mean like 1 or 2 days). As long as you heat the steak all the way through and the juices run nice and clear, then you're fine (sorry boys, no bleu steaks for you!).

The dates they put on steaks, like all food, is to cover their own arse. They stick an early date on and people use food quicker, thus buy more quicker. Also if someone was to get sick for whatever reason, the company can say "well we put a date on there for x days ago so its your own fault" and thus cant be blamed. It's just an insurance thing.

Trust me, i'm a chef*!

*Not actually true. I was a chef for 7 years. Not anymore.

The steak will be fine.

If your still unsure, give it 30 secs each side on the pan to seal it and then throw it in the oven for 10-15mins. It will cook it well but keep all the juices still in ;)
