Steak Stones- 'Steak on a stone'

What is the general consensus on these? They were on Dragons' Den a while ago and it seems that they flopped. Of course, this doesn't necessarily mean that they are useless :p

I use a cast iron Le Creuset myself but I saw these in use at a gastro pub in Newquay a couple of years ago, and I have to say that I was intrigued.

They seem expensive but other than that, my main concern is that surely the meat is afforded no opportunity to rest after it's 'cooked'.

What do you think OCUK? :)

I have eaten with these a few times, mainly in France. They are purely a novelty and they do get the table talking which is good if you are dining with quiet people. Like you say, the steak never really rests properly (unless you do it on your plate). Would not really consider using them at home, mainly because of the smell. Kitchen is for cooking, dining room for eating.

had a meal out in portugal several years ago where we used them, as above.. good fun but not somthing id want to use at home.

It's been a fad over in the far east for years... It's great for sandwich steak / fillet strips. Much like a sizzling plate, the meat won't be rested well, so thin pieces of meat works best.

As for owning one to have at home, it's a waste unless you regularly have guest dining and you want to give them something to talk about.

I own some stoneware bibimbap bowls that work in a similar way to this. They are awesome for server things on and the sizzle does add to the dining experience - at least the first few times :p

I can't imagine wanting to do this with a good steak but as other have said, thinner cuts of meat would be quite nice.
