I haven't used my steam account for ages and I can't remember what my username or password is. I've also changed my email address several times since I opened the account as well.

The steam help pages are not very helpful at all, they keep asking me for my username or product ID code. However, if I put the ID code in it sends me an email to the address I joined with. Bit frustrating but my fault for not keeping track of it :(

If I now open a new steam account will I still be able to play half life 2 or is it tied to my original account?

I did this ALL the time as well until I started writing my usernames and passwords down in a notebook which I keep close at hand beside the computer ... nothing saved on computer is safer plus only I know which pile of crap to look under to retrieve it :)

If you take a digi-pic of the HL2 box and code and create a new account, they will allow you to transfer it. It's what I did.

Isnt there an option on signing in to retrieve your password by clicking a button?

Your username will be in your program files. Enter that and send for the password.

Formatted quite a few times since I last used steam so that's no good. You can put in your product code and they will email the details to you but I don't know what email I used to register with!

Just have to trust in the email to steam.

Surely you can't have *that* many different e-mail addresses out there?

If the account is for a Half-Life 2 retail game, then you can get it switched to a new account pretty easily by proving to valve you own the game. However it's a little more tricky with Half-Life 1 based games.

i've got this problem with HL1.

When i try and register HL1 to the steam account i registered HL2 with, it gives me "this key has already been registered". I have the option to e-mail me my username and password, but i know the e-mail address i probably have it registered under is an old hotmail one that doesnt exist anymore.

Either that or somebody has hijacked my HL1 serial because there were so many keygens kicking around. because the HL1 serial wasnt the hardest of serials to hack apparently.

Every time I changed ISPs I changed email addresses. I'm now sticking with google cos it's easier :D
