Steam, adding promotion code with plan to gift in future?

I've got a promotion code from over a year ago after buying a SSD, which the retailer sent through via email after I requested it.

I've decided I don't want the game and would like to trade it. But want to check it is still valid by assigning to Steam with plan to trade not play it (in case same code was sent to someone else and they have registered it). This seems the better option against sending via email for someone to pull a fast one and say it's not valid.

Is this possible? As reading about Gifts it seems you got to buy game on Steam selecting option to gift.

I don't think you can activate a promotion code as a gift.

If you want though I can try it out for you?

Can't be done afaik.

If you don't own the game, it'll be activated on your account.
If you do own the game, you won't be able to activate it.

Ask someone who owns the game to try and activate it.

It should say "You allready own........." In which case you know it is valid.
