Steam Causing Lock Ups

Okay, so my newly built up rig is locking up because of Steam. It's definitely Steam, it's not hardware. I've updated all my drivers etc. Basically, if I don't start up Steam, I can do as I please without any problems. The lock up can come within the first 10 seconds of Steam coming on, or it can be about 10 minutes. I have no idea what to do and I know this place generally has someone that has encountered every problem. I've tried googling and most threads seem to have a bump at the end with no help, so I'm here, and praying for help lol.

OS is Windows 7.

Cheers for anyone that has any ideas.

Tried forwarding ports for steam? could be a firewall blocking the connection or something?

Not sure if steam uses .net framework (seen it being extracted when installing some games) or flash but you could try updating those or reinstalling? if not then ignore this, just giving some suggestions really

This seems to have double posted in here and Windows, mainly because as I was posting this in here it crashed without Steam being up, joyous. So it isn't Steam, I'll run a memtest now while I'm out and see what happens. My power settings were on low for some reason and I've read that this can cause problems in the many threads I've looked at via Google.

Like I said I'm not too good on the diagnostic side so the more info I can get the better :p

Edit: It just did it again as I posted this after not doing it for a while during idleness.

Edit 2: Is there any drivers I could have possibly missed due to ignorance? My SSD is showing as a driver from 2006 as is my HDD but I can't find drivers for them? Urgh this is annoying.
