Steam + CD Keys

Sorry for the odd question.

If I buy a game from a shop will the CD Key I get register on Steam?

The game is Company of Heroes, which is available on Steam but I can't buy it from Steam directly.

Has anyone done this with any other games?

Prey will let you enter a retail cd key .

Plus the obvious stuff such as valves own old games - opp forces , blue shift , HL1 or the retail CS pack from ages ago.
 
I was hoping I could register Dawn of War, Doom 3 and CoH on Steam but alas not.

CD Keys for Valve games will always be accepted on Steam. CD Keys for third party games are generally not accepted for Steam registration, unless they match the Valve CD Key format (or if they are listed below).

I tried with my Doom 3 CD copy and DoW CD copy but ddin't work.

Thought it might be different for CoH as it'll be a newer copy.
