STEAM Community Vs Windows LIVE

You have to remember with Steam though that you are getting unlimited downloads of the games you've bought. Don't all the other services make you pay an additional fee so you can download the game again in the future?
I beleive it is just EA who do that. Upon purchasing a game, they ask you if you wish to pay for an 'Extended downloads service' or something for an additional £3 iirc. I use gameplanet and they are unlimited downloads, not sure about Direct2Drive...

If GabeN turned up on my doorstep, I'd give him a kiss.
He'd eat you before you had a chance.

I actually do like STEAM, I just hated the fact originally that it was forced on you if you wanted to play CSS. However, it has got better over time and will hopefully continue to do so. Making it even more stable + sorting out the UK pricing = win win. I also wish more companies (namely EA) would adopt Steam's approach and scrap DRM. EA Link is unfortunately cack and I don't know about any of the other programs that do the same thing as Steam.

Steam still has DRM on there - it's not a simple unprotected piece of software being downloaded to your machine.

Adding to my points above - you should be able to play the game that's been downloaded without logging into Steam (as Steam then uses the statistics).

I don't like Steam at all really, I put up with it for HL2 but out of choice I wouldn't bother.

a) It's forced, and for some people, unnecessary. I just want to play HL2. Why must I install some utility that I won't use most of the features of, then update it, and update the game, etc. etc. etc.

b) And what would happen if Valve were ever to come into any kind of financial difficulty? Could the games purchased be guaranteed to work afterwards?

c) Placing the control of my account in the hands of a company isn't something that appeals either. They have the ability to just cut me off as and when they see fit, whether i've broken any rules or not. I appreciate that it's rare to just get VAC banned for no reason, but there is a chance of it happening. And then it's got to be chased up and sorted.

For the same reasons I don't want Games for Windows Live either.

By DRM, I mean limited game installs. Steam is a good way round it, although I'm aware that Ubisoft used limited installs on their steam of Facry 2 aswell, but that's not an inbuilt feature of Steam.

i doubt people with Low connection speeds like Steam to be honest and i have found steam to be pretty annoying sometimes, especially the occasional 5minutes it takes to login, i mean come on, i just wanna play the bloody game, lol

That's not Steam. Don't blame your network or system shortcomings on it. Steam login takes no more than 10 seconds, without fail.

Not every time. Steam is subject to the internet as well from there end. 99% of the time it's fine but they do have slow downs - epecially when there's a very popular game released and everyone is scambling to download it.

With regards to DRM - the publishers have it but Steam incorporates it. It title dependant (as you have said Far Cry 2) but this is only going to get worse and worse over time.
