Since MW2 came out my Steam games (i.e ALL my games) crash to desktop every so often for no reason.

I've tried deleting blob file (std Steam fix!) but to no avail. Anyone else had this problem?

Thanks !

ive had this problem, but that was since installing L4D2 not MW2, deleted blob as you mentioned but to no avail.

My L4D2 demo kept on doing that. I uninstalled. Plus now my COD 5 video scenes are really jerky and horrible..

Hi, sorry I missed the replies.

I thought it was MW2, strangely enough (or not so strangely!) I installed LFD2 at the same time. Looks like that is the issue. Anyone know how to fix it?

Straight from the Left 4 Dead 2 Forums for those in this thread experiencing the problem with the game.

Left 4 Dead 2 Crash issue

---------------------------------------------------------------------- ----------
We are aware of the issue with this game crashing to desktop with no error messages or dump files. This error can occur on start up or during game play. It has been reported that certain events can trigger the crash such as friendly fire or killing a witch. We will be pushing out a fix soon for this issue.

We appreciate your patience in this matter.

I think when I get home I shall do the verify integrity thing on all my steam games to try to sort it out. I did it on MW2 because I thought that was where the problem was!

For information I popped home for dinner just now, and turned on my pc and verified the files for L4D2.

There were two missing apparently, which Steam reaquired.

Havent had chance to test it yet, but I will let people know.

So you know :

It wasnt either game, it was AVG 9.0 causing the problem

I am also having the same problem and I am positive it is AVG 9.0 that is causing the problem, I have to alt/tab back into my games, mainly Killing Floor and L4D2. The AVG logo appears as one of the options to tab into.
How did you manage to resolve this?

Last night I deleted AVG :)

Tonight I'm going to have to find another free anti-virus .... I know its AVG though, because after deleting I played for an hour with no further CTD :)

I don't know if it's related but AVG has been recently causing me problems so I uninstalled and now use Windows Security Essentials instead.

AVG was causing my PC to randomly lock up when playing steam games, also, the tray icon had no option to exit AVG like it used to, I only got the update or open user interface options, even when AVG was updated with the latest definitions. Since the uninstall everything has been fine.

Apparently the issue was with people who upgraded to AVG 9.0.

If you remove AVG completely and reinstall 9.0 from scratch it's supposed to solve the problem.

Haven't had time to try myself yet though...

EDIT:

Solution 1 : Do a virus scan.

Solution 2 : AVG Anti-Virus ? - If you upgraded from 8.5 to 9.0 without making a clean install this issue can arise.

Download the file called "avg_free_stf_en_90_704a1756" (google it)

uninstall AVG and completely remove all user settings (there's an option for it when you uninstall it)

reboot computer and run the new file

Thanks for that, I'll try it first, I've had AVG for years and would like to keep it.

My AVG 9.0 is completely removed, I'll reinstall a fresh one and try it.
