Steam download speed

it all depends on the server you connect to on my 2mb line some times its like the update never happened and some times its like im wating for the whole game to download again

steam usually gives my crap download speeds of like 11kbps for some reason, but today I must have been lucky as I was getting 130kbps on a 4mb line. Still doesnt sound right.

So im sat here waiting on steam to update my counterstrike so I can play the new map. 25kb  on a 2mb connection.

Just wondering what speeds you guys get?

anywhere upto 250k (on 4mb) and seems to be capped as downloading more than 1 update degrades the others, pretty crap really :p

Still annoying though isn't it. If they released standalone patches like normal developers, then distributed to multiple sites (e.g. bygames, gamershell), you'd always get maximum speed.

Part of the reason I always patch my games manually rather than using auto-updaters is that I know I will be be able to find a mirror giving the full 240k/sec.

Does anyone know if the steam updater will resume where it left off if i turn it off to reboot? I'm currently downloading HL, HL2, CSS etc so i dont really want to interrupt it and have to start again if it doesnt :p

Indeed. If they have over 10gbit free bandwidth, why aren't people getting proper download speeds?

I don't have a problem with the way Valve have implemented file distribution over Steam per se, it's more that the concept is flawed to begin with.
