Well, i decided to put Half-Life 2 + Steam on, it installed fine.

But when i came to open steam it either comes up with

Could not connect to Steam network.
This could be due to a problem with your Internet connection, or with the Steam network.

or

Steam.exe (main exception): Unable to start Steam Engine: *SteamStartEngine(0x12e8c8) failed with error 200: Connection Closed by peer, WinSock Error 0 "No error"

I've tried disabling the firewall, i've manually opened all the ports and i've done both winsock-fix programs to no avail.

So please can anyone help?

Thanks in advance.

p.s: i think this is in the right forum, instead of software

I've had this problem for over a year now. Valve tech support are a joke, they asked me to send them a msinfo32 report, I did and they said "we see nothing wrong" and can't assist me further.

I've tried so many things to solve it, even had friends try help me but nothing, it just won't log on. My account works fine as I can play it on a friends machine. Now I need to format to eliminate the most of possibilities.

Screw Steam though, what I want to know is why the hell should I be forced to use a program to play my games? Valve are clowns, they make good games yeah, but their Steam program code sucks. I have the HL2 disc, the CS disc and my Steam account has nearly every Valve game on it. I have the cd-key and the case its in my room but I can't play it due to being FORCED to use Steam, that sucks honestly. Oh yeah go to steampowered forums and see what most of peoples problems are with, 99.9% of peoples problems are with Steam, but Valve are that stupid to realize that their Steam program sucks, and they can't even realize that their is compatibility issues and many other issues and they won't even bother to fix it or create a new type of Steam.

Whatever though I've posted on a ton of tech forums to try fix this, its left it at zero, nothing has helped to fix it at all.

Oh, right thats a shame.

Also, what you said about needing a program to play. Because of the whole register on steam thing, it means you cant re-sell any steam game at all, even if brought from a store and not online.

Found this out when i tried to trade in HL2: Ep1 at gamestation, but i guess they had some logical reason for doing it.
