i keep getting this error...

Running Steam in Windows compatibility mode is not recommended.
Please remove any Windows compatibility settings for all users
under file properties for Steam.exe and restart Steam

i checked all the steam .exe including the one in the steam directory and non of them are in compatibility mode...

it wont let me load steam if i click ok any solve on this

[EDIT] there is a regedit way of solving this by deleting a particular registry key but i dont like messing in the registry there must be an windows based solution...

[EDIT] windows applied this compatibility without giving me the option to back out

A quick Google came up with this fix on the Steam website (It's probably the one you have already came across):

-----
If nothing else fixs it try:
Hit start->run->regedit
Go to key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers
Look for a entry with your path to steam.exe
Delete that entry
If you dont find it there try HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows NT\CurrentVersion\AppCompatFlags\Layers

start Steam

I know you said you Didn't really want to "mess" on with the registry settings however if that's what has fixed it for quite a few people surly it's worth giving it a go? You can backup your registry settings first by going to File>Export within regedit.

The standard method to "reset" Steam is to delete everything in the Steam folder apart from the SteamApps folder and the steam.exe binary, then run it and it will update itself in a few minutes, no sure if this will solve your specific problem, though.
