Steam friends hasn't worked for...god knows how long, but now they're finally working on a revised version. If you want to try it out...just need to change your steam shortcut command line;

We're going to run a short beta on Steam to test the new version of Friends. To run the beta you'll need to run Steam from a command line, adding the following parameters:

steam.exe -clientbeta steam3friends -beta steam3friends

If you find any bugs, please edit this page with a description of the problem.

Actually seems to work too! I'm still in shock. :p

Well I would like to think that some day steam will resolve this issue, also the favorites option, It is anoying to say the least when you just carnt find the server or person you are looking for  You would think that a company like valve would be able to sort this

Someone posted a fix for the ingame favs problem, its in another thread somewhere.

how do we do this repair? lol. im a bit lame with stuff like this.

Open the properties of your steam shortcut..

And where it says Target: it'll probably say "C:\Program Files\Steam\etc etc" just add the -clientbeta steam3friends -beta steam3friends bit to the end of that.

if you want to fix the favourites in steam

1. Start CS: Source
2. Click on "Find Servers"
3. Click on the "Favourites" tab
4. Click on the "Change Filters" button
5. Drop down the "Anti-cheat" list and select "Secure"
6. Quit CS: Source
7. Start up CS: Source again
8. Click on "Find Servers"
9. Click on the "Favourites" tab
10. Click on the "Refresh" button

Hmm, i've done that, and friends is working, but now games wont refresh/gather server lists grr :(.

I never talked to anyone through the cs friends list anyway :P

I played CS yesterday for the first time in a year!

Problem with X-Fire is it takes agggggessss to updat. I get my mate to joina server which i want to follow and he is in with loads of frag before x-fire has updated and if he changes serser it send me to the old one until eventually it updates again.. Steam friends list will be good as it updates almost instantly with there server info. And you can choose join when a slot is available .. unlike x-fire.

Personally i think x-fire could use some large improvements to really make it special, it would also be nice to have teamspeak integration so i dont need to have both running.

i'm pretty sure xfire refreshes if you click off the person you want to play with and then back on again. Would be silly if it were constantly updating all the contacts in the list, but you can force the refresh. Never really use mine anyway as we mainly play on a group of servers stored in my favourites, dont need it for chatting to them as thats what irc is for. Dont think i ever really used the friends network even when it did work.

Nice to see valve sorting out one of the problems tho.
