Steam game broadband download very slow

Steam is downloading Counter strike painfully slowly, i have broadband(up to 8 Meg but never gets anywhere near) left PC downloading it for over an hour and its only 24% done is this normal for Steam downloads or do i need to give my broadband provider a kick up the ass?

have you run a test from speedtest.net?
Is there anybody else sharing the network that might be slowing it down?
Have you got anything else running? torrent downloader or BBC iPlayer, 40d etc?

Will try speedtest when i finish work, nobody else shares the network, and nothing else is running

Close Steam, delete your "ClientRegistry.blob" file and then re-open Steam. You might get faster downloads after that.

If you have up to MB you could only be on 3 or less. Given that CSS is quite large 4 hours doesn't seem to bad to download it?
