Hear me out guys,

I have a main PC and a netbook:)

Could I download and save a Steam game to my steam account on my netbook's hard drive and then when I'm back home, transfer the game from the netbook to the main pc?(instead of downloading on a limited internet connection)

I would use a portable hard drive and copying and pasting the specific game from the steamapps folder. Would this work?

Any help much appreciated.

Yes, pretty much. You may have to do a small update to the one you moved to, but as long as you take the huge data files for the game it is fine. It will just download whatever you are missing being able to play.

I think it should work although there may be a very small amount of downloading required on the main PC (some metadata or blubblub).

Yep, it may have to redownload a couple of configs and things, but it works.

*insert joke about redheaded step children and domestic abuse here*

I always do this and never had to download anything, once had to verify BLOPs files though, but that was only once

I'm not so sure Portal 2 is a good example, in the past Source Engine games use loads of shared assets, found just in the steamapps folder. I have no idea which, if any, contain Portal 2 data, but there's a good chance that files like 'source materials.gcf' may contain Portal 2 data, so parts of these may need to be downloaded as well.

Yep, I did it when I was in Uni. I downloaded all the games to my laptop, bought a Crossover Ethernet cable (faster this way) and transferred the files over to my new PC without any problems.
