I am using the beta client of Steam and have noted they allow you to make changes on how game updates are going to be applied......

So, games that I am not playing at this moment will only update when I wish them to ,altho could be an issue if I actually wanted to play at that moment in time, rather than continually schedule and update.
At this point, only just noted the feature, I'm not sure what would happen if, as an example, No Mans Sky, that also has an update set as shown above, is not played in quite some time and other updates supersede the queued one, unless they need to be applied incrementally of course.

Still, decent enough, for the way I ignore many games for quite a while.

New?? You sure??

I've had it set to only update some of my games when I choose to for a long time.

It wasn't in the stable branch, for me and only appeared when I moved over to the beta build.

I first read it here, overat Neowin....

Even my beta client does not have all the features shown in that link.

Could there various builds of the stable client depending on some other factors..?

Been using the only update on launch option for ages on the standard client to avoid modded games auto updating.
