Steam Gamers Are Avid BitTorrent Users

It is their reaction that gives them away, even before any accusation is made ;) Much like your own.

so your telling me nearly everyone in the ffiv beta doesnt download the patchs via bittorent? , and WOW players?

the actual downloaders they use is a highly modified version of bitorrent it has no way of limiting your upload speed.

some of these patchs are very large , when you are uploading at 100% your download speed is severly limited and so is anything else you can do that requires the internet.

its so much better just to install utorrent and open up the .torrent the ffiv/wow patcher downloaded to your computer

Surely these stats are wrong.

Internet Explorer 20%? If there are 5% Mac users surely this number should be far closer to 95% (and infact the software stats don't include Mac yet). Last time I checked IE wasn't exactly easy to remove from a Windows installation?

I wonder if the stats only factor in what users actually launch and not just the most common apps that are installed.

It's not Internet Explorer 20%, it is MICROSOFT Internet Explorer 19.82%. Don't forget that IE hasn't been called that since what, IE6? IE7 and IE8 are both called Windows Internet Explorer, so basically what it is saying is, ~20% of users have IE6 (or below) installed.

Biggest shock for me was Skype at 41.75%, that seems a helluva lot!

Win7 doesnt come with IE on computers in Europe.

I'm pretty sure mine did, didn't they u-turn on that idea shortly before release?

I declined the survey but I don't have any torrent clients installed anyway. :p

(Bane of oversubscribed areas tbh!)

True enough it's now called Windows IE but that's the only IE entry on their list? So I'm still confused and still think their stats are wrong :P.

fascist sods lol

i'm a steam user but haven't had any bittorent clients on any of my machine in over 5 years, i pay for my music, dvds, blu rays, games, tv boxsets.
i like to look at big boxsets and read descriptions and any associated blurb thats usually bundled with such things

skype wasn't all that surprising tbh, its used for a lot of things.
i know a lot of companies that actually use it, as well as lots of modding communities.

skype can be used as a normal instant messenger as well as creating permanant chat rooms that can be used for a team working on projects to communicate and view everything that has been said when they were not online.

most likly they jsut get the list of your installed programs, ie the one in your registry thats used in the Add/Remove programs.
and most new versions of windows has IE built in and isn't listed there.

So the stats prolly just show the ppl who are running the old versions that they had to install seperatly

IE is not integrated anymore. The European courts fined Microsoft a massive amount of money and ordered them to separate it.

It still doesn't show up in Programs list though. I've got IE8 installed and it isn't listed.

That's great, but how many companies are going to have Steam installed on their machines?

I'm not suggesting Skype isn't a popular application, it was just a shock to me that getting on for half of all Steam users would have it installed, bearing in mind that in the gaming community it doesn't seem as popular for communication as say Steam chat, xfire, IRC, Teamspeak/Ventrilo/Mumble, MSN etc

In fact I've changed my mind while thinking the above, the biggest shock to me is actually that mIRC doesn't feature at all - less than 0.69% (!!) have it.

does it show up in add/remove programs like it used to then ?

i dont really know coz i dont use IE

The first time you start ''internet'' iirc it starts an ie window, with a list of the most popular browsers and makes you select and download one.

well i usually work for games companies, so a lot of them are gamers, so i would say a lot :P

but of course, other companies, not so much.

but then a lot of modding teams use it as well, and if the game they are modding is on steam, then the whole team would also have steam installed.

but half the steam users does seem pretty high.
especially as windows live messenger isn't much higher.

im quite surprised about mIRC, perhaps so many ppl use a different clients now ?

u would think with all the gamers that go on irc looking for games of Counter Strike/TF2 to play, it would be higher

To be fair I would expect the mIRC numbers to be dwindling compared to say 5 years ago, as

-There are probably a higher proportion of Steam users that are casual gamers now rather than those playing competitive FPS games where IRC is an integrated part of the scene
-There seems to be a growing trend towards integrated chat clients in (and popularity of) games/steam/xfire etc
-The number of people on Quakenet (most popular network for gamers) is dwindling: http://irc.netsplit.de/networks/details.php?net=QuakeNet&submenu=years

However I just find it hard to believe that less than 0.69% have mIRC installed (they don't even have to use it anymore!), I mean it's not like IRC has been totally abandoned by the gaming community.
