Steam Games Problem

Hi, my mate has a problem with steam and all his games. He's already tried all the obvious uninstalling/reinstalling of all the games and steam itself etc.

Yet he stil has a problem where he will click to start a game, it says starting the game then comes up with: "hl2.exe has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience."

I get that, though only when ending a game and coming out of it. Sorry, don't know the cure. If it is a recent problem he's been experiencing then perhaps the next update will help.

I used to have a problem like that until i updated my DirectX, not sure it will work though.
