Hi

I am looking to try out a few PC games and it seems the easiest way is by using Steam?

Is the service any good or is is bad but something you have to put up with in PC gaming?

Just looking for some opinions before I make the jump.

Cheers

its good.

ill prefer to get games via steam (pre order etc) as its convenient, no dvd's to faff with, auto updates, pretty secure too. I only buy collector editions of games retail now.

If you don't have a stable internet connection then I can see potential problems with it (although as long as you can download the games, then you can use 'offline mode' on steam to run without an internet connection).

Otherwise, it's come a very long way from way back when it was launched. It's a fantastic digital distribution service with a huge selection of games to choose from.

I couldnt be happier with steam :). I've seen a few posters on here who don't like it, but it seems to be a matter of personal taste for the digital distribution system.

(steam support can be a bit of a pain i've heard, but i've never actually had to use it myself in all of my time using the service)

Also steam sales are awesome :D

I never used steam for years. But I like the idea of it and how all your games are as such safe and you can't lose a CD. Now I have a few on it :)

I like it, its not without it niggles but unlike other such services it actually feels useful rather than an extra 1-3 steps between me and playing my game.

i think its awesome. yeh it can take a while, a very long while, to download when sales are on. but the fact that you have no more worries about scratched discs, changing discs, losing discs and the amazing prices they can offer during sale time, whats not to like?
other than it will empty your wallet, as the choice is far greater than your wallet can handle

Just make sure you don't have a low monthly download limit on your internet connection. Most games are around 4-8gb, but the occasional one runs to 15 or 20.

I love steam. I've been using it for a few years since I got the orange box. I never was a digital distribution fan, I loved getting boxes, the smell of a new manual etc etc

But I'm warming to digital distribution now, it's great and so is steam ! :D

It's not perfect though. Backing up games and restoring them can be a problem occasionally, also when the servers are full, it can take AGES to download a game :o
