Steam - Id super pack

Hmm also tempted with this one, anyone know if you can use some of the old mods or does steam get in the way?

ID Software Super Pack is effectively paying £36 for a tenner worth of Doom3 and RoE expansion pack. The pack is missing essentials - Quake4, Quake Wars and Heretic II, so effectively unless you want to play few old VGA dos games again (weren't the original Dooms released free by various publishers the way?) or don't have already long in tooth Quake III, Super Pack is very short on excitement.

Original Dooms are not free afaik.
Quake is extremely hard to source now so Steam provides a good option.
I also must have been pretty lucky to get the 'DOS VGA' games like RTCW and Quake 2 running in OpenGL!

I know what you are getting at, and to be fair most of the older games will likely not get more than 15mins nostalgic playtime in SP mode as they will show their age. So there is an argument to say that the pack is maybe a little overpriced for most people who aren't going to fancy chugging through say the D2/Q/Q2 mission packs.

I guess it all depends really on what games people already have. QW is still my favourite multiplayer game, and Q2/Q3 have their supporters too.

It's understandable that titles like Q4, ET:QW and Heretic2 aren't present, as they weren't developed by id software. What I find rather strange however is that some other 3rd party titles such as Heretic and RTCW are included, it doesn't really make sense.

Doom and Quake, IIRC were given free as open source a while ago. In effect there are quite a few "modernized" versions with high resolutions and texture packs free to download out there. ET:QW is in ID Software catalogue on Steam, would definitely make Super Pack worth the asking price. Q4 is defo ID Software's game but for whatever reason is completely absent from Steam distribution. The offering is just messy and inconsistent.

The source was released to the public but the game assets were not (bar any shareware releases), you still have to own a the orignal games to use their assets with any of the souce mods. Quake Wars was released after the ID super pack and I can only assume the reason Quake 4 isn't there is because of the publishers still hold an exclusive contract to distribute it therfore ID can't sell it on themselves.

The pack is fantastic value for money at £36, its worth it for Quake 3 (which is very hard to source new) and Doom 3 alone.

I think you are confusing the GPL'd Quake Source code released ~8yrs ago with the full game. The Quake 'content' (maps, textures, sounds etc) is NOT free or open source, only the core engine code is. So for example while you can get fantastic updated Quakeworld clients like ezquake, which make Quake (gfx aside) arguably the most technologically advanced FPS around, you can't actually play the standard maps unless you own the game (excluding the Episode 1 shareware maps). I imagine the same holds true for Doom although I'm not really au fait with that series as unlike QW I no longer play it.

Quake 4 isn't really an id software game (in terms of the actual game design and content), it was developed by Raven. It uses technology developed by id and like several of Raven's offerings (Heretic/Hexen series) has a high level of support / collaboration from id, but the actual game content itself is Raven's: http://www.ravensoft.com/GamesDetail/tabid/76/XMID/21/Default.aspx

is it really worth it as i have quake 4 and i did not like like it quake 3 was a blast but you can get it free now same for quake 2 , i have wallfenstain and can get doom 3 so i guess i will not buy it.

For anyone who already has or are not interested in RTCW, Q3 and some of the earlier titles, then no, it's not really worth it. You can probably pickup Doom3 and the expansion for around £15 total.
