A news update from Steamdb indicates that Steam are taking measures to restrict users who use a VPN to try to purchase video games with prices ofter lowe than the users own own country.

The countermeasure is simple: STEAM now requires users who have migrated the location of their store, to pay with a payment method corresponding to the local currency of the country.

A few years ago STEAM banned users who migrated to the Russian version of the store to buy games. The terms of conditions of Steam say the following: Valve has recently made changing your store country more strict, which requires completing a purchase using a payment method from that country. This should hinder the ability of using VPNs to buy games cheaper.

I've never VPN'd steam stores before. Never found a reason to. I've bought keys from key sites though.

Origin on the other hand...

I don't agree with the business model of "a country pays what it can afford to pay"

why should a product be far cheaper India, Russia, Brazil, Taiwan or wherever than somewhere else.
it's blatant profiteering.

don't tell us it's a global world bla bla if your going to charge what you think a market can bare..

some rich dood in russia can buy a game for 20 rubles or a stalker coin, but a poor person in some other country has to pay far more? how does that make sense.

is it not some kind of price racquet monopoly shady thing going on and exploitation based on a countries perceived wealth

This was always coming I feel. What with the buying from the eastern europe trick or the south american countries method. Was always going to be just a matter of time before they did something about it.

Totally agree, these practices should be banned.

Surprised they took this long & as they are losing so much market share to game pass, origin & epic its not going to be long before they have regional keys as they have nothing left to lose as their market share is rapidly dropping!

So keys from the likes of CDKeys and others might not work in the future

I will logged on to steam and found that had happened I'd never pay them another penny for anything, and yes I do mostly but games direct from steam, the odd one here and there is from cdkeys.

If I*

example
average UK salary is
£35,423
indian average wage is
9,096.36GBP

so UK earns roughly 3x what indian earns so £60 game here would be £180 in India

both from same shop in 2 different countries
horizon zero dawn uk - £14
horizon zero dawn india - INR 869.00 uk price 8.90128GBP x 3 = £24

more expensive in india

both from same shop in 2 different countries
Witcher 3 - UK - £17
Witcher 3 - INR 2189 - UK £22 (with 3x £66)
again more expensive in india

I was listening to someone the other day who said that if you earn $32,000 you are in the top 1% in the World.

Quite shocking.
