help please I cannot open port 27031 for incoming on my windows 10 laptop for wired connection.
HELP !!!!!!!!!!!!! please !!!!! the steam link is sending me crazy , I have it all hooked up via wired to my tp link router for connections .

The steam link is connected via wired and this is confirmed on the steam link

The steam link has the very latest update installed.

steam link sees my computer for connecting via steam big picture starts on my computer but nothing happens the other end on the steam link to the TV

I test the network I get a message :- Could'nt connect to Desktop ******* on port 27031

So I went into control panel on windows 10 , went to firewall settings and tried to open the ports, networks are not my strong point , but please can anyone point me towards a basic windows 10 guide on how to open the ports that I need for steam link , its sending me bonkers !!!!

Or please tell me where I am going wrong ...when I am typing in port 27031 into my firewall settings , I am just entering 27031 setting tcp etc , but should the network number that is been added be more complex such as 80.27031 followed by other numbers.....am I simply not entering the number in the correct format ?

OR should I infact be opening ports on my router ? or my both laptop and router ?

here is a link to the required ports that need to be open.

Steam works great on my laptop for playing games and syncing saves etc , no issues at all....

But getting my steam link and laptop to work together is sending me nuts.

I get the same message but Steam link still works fine so not sure if that is your problem.

Try uninstalling/reinstalling Steam on the host perhaps?

Your issue is that you most likely need to open the ports on your router the article you link even explains that:

"Which ports do I need to open on my router or firewall for Steam"

You will need to have access to your router at home - with admin Login and password - do you have this?

what model router do you have and I will see if i can help you.

He shouldn't have to open ports on his router because the traffic between the PC and Steam link is within the same local network - traffic shouldn't even hit the default gateway. Remove that port forwarding because you could be exposing your kit to evil on the outside.

OP - you basically need to add Steam as an allowed app in windows firewall. I'm not at home so can't really chuck instructions together. Maybe when Steam was installed before, it didn't get these permissions granted on the pop-up dialogue box.

You can temporarily disable windows firewall to prove that's the issue.

Ive not had to open ports either - and Narj - You make a completely fair comment.

Does the streamlink not require any external traffic access or internal ports for streaming? Or is ALL information provided by the host machine?

Reading online:

Client Isolation
In order to use the Steam Link, please ensure that AP/Client isolation is disabled on your router. If you are unable to access this setting, or are connecting via a guest, hotel, university or public network that has enabled AP/Client isolation, you will be unable to properly set up your Steam Link.

Network Ports
Streaming uses UDP ports 27031 and 27036 and TCP ports 27036 and 27037. Please make sure Steam can listen on these ports in your firewall software.

So if there are restrictions on the chaps router for streaming via those ports internally? Then that could also be the cause?

Another quick google for more issues specific to TP Link comes up with this suggestion:

Can you use in home streaming on another client?, i.e. a laptop that has steam installed?

Disable the AP/Client isolation setting on your router because this will prevent you from configuring the steam link correctly. TP link: Wireless---Wireless Advanced---Enable AP Isolation. Make sure that the checkmark is unchecked.

I have a TP-Link Router and stream PC->WiFi->Router->Ethernet->Steam Link. I've never had to fiddle with WiFi settings at all so I'd be surprised if that's on by default. :) OP seems to suggest it's all wired anyhow.

Good luck, OP! When it works, it's great.
