Steam Link laggy as hell

The Link is absolutely unplayable for me.

40Mb/10Mb fibre
Link wired via Homeplugs

sometimes it shows 0% packet loss 20ms others 97% packet loss 80ms.

even when on 0 loss you just cant play at all. Something like Black Ops is great on the console but with my 360 controller on the Link the input lag is at least half a second and even then a full spin on my character lags, I can barely see anything in game as it stutters and freezes so bad.

Have the stream on Fast and even though it looks terrible it still lags. Games like GTA 5 at 30fps play at like 5fps.

Firstly, your internet speed has nothing to do with the steam link. It's all about your network connection speed between your PC and the link. Is the PC wired/home plugs or wireless?

Game streaming needs constant throughput which can strain most non-cabled networks. Poweline adaptors can also pick up a lot of interference (especially between floors / rings) which will reduce speeds.

Try doing a LAN speed test (the link will probably have one in settings) and see what speeds you get.

I had to upgrade my wifi to AC to be able to use game streaming but running a cable will get you the best results.

I wouldn't want to use the steam link to game on anything other than wired gigabit, the lag must be noticeable even on a half decent wireless ac connection, that's why I haven't purchased one, even though I'd like to :(

Web browsing, menus etc would be ok, but gaming where you need an instant response must be pants :(

I used steam in home streaming using 1 pc with a wired connection, another wireless. I also tried to use home plugs. I personally had far more issues with home plugs offering a stable connection than wireless. I did a test with both home plugs in the same socket to see if was interference and it didn't make it any better.

I will add when I had both PCs connected over wireless I had issues.

Gaming is in fact terrible but I do not know how I would achieve a wired connection with the Link.

The Link is in Living Room 2 connected via home plugs
Router is in in Living Room 1
PC is in Bedroom connected via Pass-thru home plugs

the amount of effort it would require to have that good of a connection to the Steam Link to make it half playable is too much work. This is particularly annoying considering I can stream from my PC on my Macbook downstairs ON WIFI without lag but the Link on both lags like hell.

I may just HDMI my mac up to my TV and play it that way but I am not sure if the 360 adapter would work and also it would not be a permanent solution.

I had a similar issue with home plugs - turned out they were the problem. Had to buy AV2 home plugs which were quite costly, but they 100% resolved the issue.

I can't remember what I had before but it was a basic TP link AV1 homeplug - I had to buy 2 of these:

Expensive obviously - I bit the bullet and bought them as I basically looked at it as an investment - I play a lot of online games and this stabilized my ping from around 60ms to a consistent 30ms and completely resolved any steam link issues.

How do you know if they are av2?

These good? https://www.amazon.co.uk/TP-LINK-TL...8940&sr=1-1&keywords=tp+link+pass+through+av2

I'm not sure to be honest...it doesn't seem to be clear.

I found this which lists several different homeplugs which are all AV2.

One thing to be careful of though - the homeplug I got is a 1200 version - you can get cheaper 500 version but I can't guarantee this would resolve your problem.

This is a pair of the ones I have - haven't seen them cheaper but I can understand you don't necessarily want to spend £80...

At that point its just cheaper to get the nVidia Shield.

You will have the same issue.

I don't use Steam streaming anymore as I bought an Nvidia Shield TV so use gamestreaming. While I would argue that I find it a bit more polished for playing non-steam games it still requires just as much network speed.

I use an Asus AC68U which provides enough wireless speed for it to work smoothly as long as you are in decent range but it these things will never be 100% for fast reaction gaming.

I might just build a more compact PC next time and move it around. Heading off to Uni n all it would be more reasonable to actually have a smaller and easier to carry PC.
