steam link problems

hey guys, i've got some steam link problems.
I grabbed one cheap in the sale but a lot of games have problems.
It took me a while to figure out that for a lot of games i had to set my video settings to windowed in order to work for most games (even then some still don't stream the video),
but the main problem at the moment is that for a few of the games i've tried my 360 controller doesn't work, even though it works for a couple of others.
this is mainly for non-steam games (as i don't have many steam ones but the ones i do have do work)

is there something simple i'm missing here?
the controller works for these games when plugged into the pc btw

kind of embarrassing really and i don't know why i didn't try it first, but simply setting steam to run as administrator fixed it.
Of course you have to ignore the steam warnings saying that running in any compatibility mode is not advised.
i have no idea why it would make a difference in some games and not others but it all worked fine as soon as i did it.
