Steam lost all my keybinds?

Hi,

Reinstalled Windows 7 last night (on a seperate partition). I had previously backed up all my savegames and other stuff that gets deposited in My Documents, etc.

When I installed Steam again (over the top of where it was previously) and loaded some games I was surprised to see that pretty much all of them had reset to default keybindings and graphics settings. The savegames were visible, but when I loaded any of them I just had the default WASD configuration.

For some reason it seemed like even though nothing (I think?) had changed in terms of directory structure or what files had been stored every time I tried starting a game it acted like I had just installed it and did the whole DirectX install thing, and "X will now determine the best graphic settings for your computer".

Any thoughts? I could only surmise that stuff in the Steam Cloud was overwriting what I already had, but why would files in Steam Cloud have default keybindings, etc?

What games are you refering to?

Also, as a new install, you would need the Directx installs for that game as they will not be on the system.

Skyrim, Deus Ex:HR, Fallout 3. Haven't tried others yet but suspect they will be the same. All 3 had the save games come up but default controls.

When you say "new install" do you mean Windows? Steam was installed over the top of where it already was in the previous install (on a seperate partition to Windows). I naively assumed that backing up the My Documents and other folders on C: where game stuff is stored I would keep all of my keybinds and graphics settings, etc.

I haven't really used Steam for "new" games for a long time, but the way it used to work is it could collate your savegames into a single area no problem (or now using the Steam Cloud), but all the key-binds etc are not a part of the save-game, they're in the game install directory, usually as a config file - this will be replaced everytime you download games etc.

I think so. I backed up my whole user folder (C:\Users\<user>) and restored the stuff in "My Documents", including the subfolder "My Games" where Skyrim et al stored the save games.

The "Cloud" does not have to contain keybinds/graphics settings etc :)

That is down to what the developer has chosen to allow the "cloud" to synch.

Most of the time, it is just game saves as graphics settings can cause problems if you play on more than one computer.

Have a look in your backup of %UserProfile%\AppData\Roaming. Tonnes of gaming stuff seems to end up in there.
Bring back the good old days of .ini files in the game directory, none of this registry, random user folder or cloud **** :)
