Steam Memory Leak?

For some odd reason if I try to defragment TF2 or verify its integrity it gradually takes up all of my memory

Example - my PC was using around 40% RAM - started to defrag TF2 using Steam and it ended up on 99% and virtually killed my system. It's really odd and annoying.
 
does it do the same if u try to defrag any other games on steam? does it come up with a BSOD or does it just grind to a snails pace?
 
humm, have u tried running mem test incase theres something up with your ram? leave it run for about 2 hours so it does a few passes and see what happens, or possibly checked on steam forums for similar problems.

this does indeed sound odd, because im sure when you defrag it just puts a small chunk into memory then re writes it to the HDD so it doesnt use much ram atall....
 
hummmm well im stupped :( have u sent a question to steam about it? i know this next solution might be a hastle but have u tried uninstalling them, deragging the system and reinstalling then then trying? long winded i know but maybe some random file has gone nuts :p
