Steam noob question

Right need your help lads.
Upgraded from xp to windows 7 today morning. Everythin is running find.
But last night i backed the steam folder on my portable hard drive.
What i would like to know can i copy and paste the backup steam folder in to the main steam folder? Was told it wont work because backup folder was running on xp. Not compatible.

Is this true

paste it back in and run steam. might have to delete the client blob file though.

Nope, will be fine, I've done it in the past from xp>vista and vista>7

Either download the steam exe from the website (the small installer one) and point it at that folder (this is what I've done in the past), or I think you can just run the steam.exe already in the folder and it will update what ever is neccessary.

Iv already installed steam. Just the games need installing. So i can just paste it in steam folder again without any hesitation. Sweet.

Yes i've done this. Half of my games were ghosted out as though they weren't downloaded but when I clicked install/download they go to 100% complete in about 2 seconds.
