We have had no broadband for over a week now and I finished Dead Space 2 last night which was on my EA origin account and let me play it offline no problem.

ALl my other games that I have to play are on my Steam account (including portal 2 which I bought on disk) and Steam won't let me play any of them offline. It starts, tries to update, says failed connection, click here to start in offline mode and then pops up another error about "cannot connect to steam network" and throws me back to desktop.

Anyway I can play any of my 100+ games? :(

You need to have previously launched the game you wish to play whilst in online mode, in order for offline mode to work. You also need to be online to go into offline mode.

Well I have started all the games I want to play previously and how stupid is neededing to be online to go offline?

That's not right is it?

My laptop hasn't been online in about 6 months, but i can play any Steam game as and when i want

I think my problem is the steam client wants an update and unless it is up to date then yu can't go into offline mode. Bad timing I guess.

i think it always does that when in online mode.

when i didn't have a connection for a short time it did that for me. But i just left it, eventually it times out and sticks you in offline mode temporaraly. (took awhile thou)

switching to offline mode while still online bypasses the updates so you dont have to wait

It does thanks. It means I'm stuffed. Steam obviously needs an update and I have no broadband so no update = no offline mode.:(

I knew there was a problem with having my games digitally downloaded.

And BT informed me today it will be up to two more weeks before we have broadband back.:(
Can you link your PC to your mobile phone and then use your mobile phone internet onnection through your PC to update steam
