Steam on release - "this will never take off"

I've had steam since it was first released, I was one of those lucky people that had to sign up using their email address as the username!

The only people bothered about Steam on release were CS players. And that was only 'cos they were worried about the swap from the WON system that had been used and trusted for years... no one else knew what SteamIDs/WONIDs were (unless you played some other Sierra games on WON - there weren't many if I remember).

Everyone also hated Steam at first cos it was very flaky and buggy, and also for some reason a system hogger.

I am now offshore with my gaming laptop, that I bought at considerable expense from OcUK, just so that I could game, when I am offshore.

My policy for years on Steam was that if a game required Steam, I either didnt play it or I bootlegged it. In recent times I have caved in on this policy, unfortunately.

Steam will now not let me play any of my legit Steam games. Although I opt to start Steam in offline mode, it tells me that I must go must connect to the Steam server in order to verify my username and password. Obviously, my connection via the companies ultra expensive satellite internet will not allow me to do that. So that will be 5 weeks until I can play any of my Steam games again. How much happier would be if I had just gotten bootleg copies of these games?

Origin poses me no such problems. As soon as it realises that I cant get online, it goes to offline mode, no hassle at all. This doesn't mean that I like Origin either cos I hate it. But obviously a nasty pain right up the ringpiece DRM platform that actually allows people to play games they have paid money to be allowed to play, is far superior to a nasty blood sucking parasite DRM, that don't allow you to play.

I have just bought my last Steam title ever. As soon as I get back onshore I will be applying cracks to all my Steam games and shall never touch the platform again.

Steam was a total pile of unnecessary middle man **** all those years ago and still is.

Have you tried disabling your NIC/Wireless so there's no available network connection? I've had this problem before and worked around it by disabling my network connection.

I never had any major problems with Steam and I've been using it since it was launched.

I remember trying the beta of Steam & thinking that it would & should die instantly.

I saw it as really only a replacement for WON, most of the time it crashed or never worked in the first place so I thought it would fall flat on its face..........I'm great at stuff like that.

When it was released it wasn't a whole lot better, I'm so glad they turned it around. Most others who try to copy it kind of fail IMHO.

You need to be connected to the 'net when you activate offline mode for some games to accept it (or at least you used to) - others are perfectly happy in offline mode without the 'checking' stage.

Switch to offline mode BEFORE leaving, I think is the (sadly too late in your case and counterintuitive) message.

I figured that Steam didn't like the fact that I had a connection which wasn't allowing Steam to connect, which is what caused the problem to begin with....

.....but too late for that now.

But if I am not mistaken, Steam has been on the go for getting onto 10 years now? Why is this even a problem? Why is not a problem with Origin which has been on the go for not even 2 years?

If I just pirated all my games, I would have none of these problems.

My internet was down last 5 days, offline mode of steam worked flawlessly, fortunately. Only thing that sucks about it was that it did not track my playtime when offline.
