Steam on your TV

I have, its annoying, steam REALLY need to sort this, also it should have cloud saves, that way I can play on my games rig when I wanna sit back with a beer, but if it got serious move up stairs to my mental pc, gaming, its a serious business ya know.

Ah, fair enough. You could always turn off steam guard but that's a bit risky.

I quite like this.. will work well on my HTPC in the front room...

now if they integrated video and music playback aswell we would have one nice little front end for a media pc

I've been waiting for this for over a year, and I have to say, it's much better than i was expecting.

The Controller interface for navigating webpages is brilliant, and the virtual keyboard is amazing. I'm a longtime HTPC user, and the virtual keyboards for remotes and controllers found in media centre programs universally suck. This is amazing, and I hope some mod developers incorporate a version of it for remotes in xbmc and similar programs.

Sounds good for some games, but personally I prefer m/k over a pad for nearly everything apart from anything involving driving as a stick just offers smoother turning.

I suppose a good market for this will be indie games as steam rules that arena and most can be enjoyed with a pad.

Just for those of us who haven't been paying attention, does this run from a PC in the house and is wired directly to the TV?

My PC is in my study (office), my main TV is in my lounge, if it had to be a direct connection I simply couldn't do it...

It's intended for a PC connected directly to a TV, you might be able to do something with HDMI extenders.

Yes, this is simply a different looking interface for the Steam application running on a PC in your house hooked up to a TV (well, really, any display)

So yes, you'd need a PC hooked up to your TV. If you haven't got this - then this update isn't designed for you. If however, like me, there's a PC in the living room already hooked up to a TV, then this will be great once I figure out a way of launching it using the remote control from Media Center.

Ah thought so, if it had to be cabled distance would be an issue!

I quite like the idea of 'casually' playing older games I own but simply never finished or even started - Skyrim and Mass Effect 2 spring to mind.

I played around with this last night, seems pretty smooth and sleek!

One thing though, i don't know if i was doing something wrong? But is there a way to control the cursor with the windows xbox pad? As some games like Ubisoft ones, need a mouse to click launch/play button because of its DRM thing. Also its the same with installing a new game to, that little box that pops up with a cd-key needs a mouse to click it off. Kinda defeats the point of using a pad, if i have to get up and use my mouse just to click certain things.

I do know its beta, so maybe these things are to be fixed.

I would REALLY benefit from this.

9 times out of 10 I am sat on my bed, with my 360 controll and my PC displaying on my 50" plasma...

Only time I sit infront of the PC for games is with a MMO or a competative online FPS.

So yea, would love something like this!

We have our TV as a dual screen to use xbmc on - would I be able to play games on that screen with this or would they just default to the monitor (#1) like they usually do?

Also agree that it would be a good idea to only show controller enabled games, it's a bit pointless having a 'kick back in the living room' steam that still needs m&k/b for games.

I use unified remote for my phone. It allows you to control the mouse pointer using the touchscreen, plus loads more. I love it.

100% agree, can't see me ever having a mouse and keyboard in my lounge!

That said I don't have a console either.

Here are some of the changes being made in a client update this evening..

  • Fixed displayed price on discounted transactions being higher than the actual transaction price (user was charged correct amount for these transactions).
  • Added available date to store for coming soon items
  • Fixed navigating to install demo and related buttons for games in the store
  • Fixed navigating from store front page to packages
  • Fixed Big Picture crashing on GPUs supporting only DX 9.1/9.2 shader levels
  • Added clearer failure messages for various startup/D3D failures
  • Fixed zoom in web browser getting stuck on an input control if you dismissed the Daisywheel
  • Fixed daisywheel to work on Google+ (html5 div contenteditable support)
  • Added support for F5 refresh in the browser
  • Fixed the browser to go to the URL instead of searching if the entered text starts with www.
  • Fixed display of store featured categories and genres for languages other than English
  • Fixed in-game screenshot bind in the library view so it updates if you rebind the key
  • Fixed display of custom images for non-steam games in the big picture grid view
  • Fixed assert during big picture friends or group chat

One in bold being the one I've noticed and has bugged the heck out of me, so looks like Valve really are committed to making this venture work - think I've grown to love Steam even more...:p

Now it needs better youtube app, icon to show controller enabled games, some type of virtual mouse support, as some games even though gamepad is supported, you need to use a mouse to get past a menu or something..

Sure this list will be bigger, but these are key points for me..
