Steam os released today in USA

If strenaing was so important, you would allready have it, its not hard to do.
Just bec uase games are on steam doesnt mean they run on linx.

Basic features like takingb screen grabs, file managment etc. dropping back to linux isnt a opption for these things, can you imagine trying to navigate and do things in linux with a controller.

Its a tiny market share at best it will attract and thats if its done well. Lots oof games just arent deisgned for controllers anyway, and with such a tiny marketshare they arent going to get them converted, without doing what MS is doing and spending biillions enticing people to redevlope.

Its at best two years away anyway, so if you want streaming getb it done now.

Streaming realllllly doesn't work well at all, so that's why people are intrigued.

No Steam machine here, but I had a go at installing the OS on my spare system and put a bit of a video together. :)

Be careful if you give it a try, the install process in automatic mode will literally erase your hard drive without asking ANY questions. Fortunately I tested it out on a spare system, but it will only install on PCs that can do a UEFI mode boot so pre-Sandy Bridge machines are probably out, and at present they only support NVIDIA graphics cards.

System I tried it with was a Haswell Core i7 with a GeForce GT430 and everything seemed to work pretty much flawlessly, other than having to switch my audio output from HDMI to analogue output for my capture card.

Tested with Super Meat Boy and Portal and both worked straight off, no fiddling required. Literally just installed the OS, logged in to Steam, downloaded updates and then downloaded the games.

There is a workaround, you don't need UEFI:

And those games should work, they are years old now and were ported to Linux/Ubuntu a year ago.

Nice spot. Should be handy for some.

True, but given the hassle I've had getting Linux running games in the past it was quite a pleasant experience to see them work straight out the box. I'll try a few newer titles, but the GT430 in my test system is a bit weak tbh.
