Steam: password/email problems

Asking on behalf of my brother. Long story short his hotmail account was hacked, and so he deactivated his account.

His steam password wasn't working when he tried to log into steam, so there's a chance that they changed it, or he could have just forgotten his own password.

He has auto login setup on his computer though, so he can still access his steam account. Here's the problem: to change the email he associated with his account, he needs to enter his password.

But... he needs his email to change his password, and needs his password to change his email.

Is there anything we can do? I'm going to see if the hotmail account can get reopened up or something, but I think that's a risky move considering it's been hacked.

In terms of ownership of the Steam account, if you contact Steam support, I believe in the past for other people some sort of proof of purchase for a game on the account and has got the account back. Best thing would be to contact Steam and explain the situation.

The only game he has on there is the free version of TF2 :o

The reason he needed his password again is because he just bought Football Manager and wants to install it :(

Unfortunately, the steam website is blocked from where I am right now, would you be able to post their number?

Surely if all he currently has is the free version of TF2, he could just save a whole load of hassle and create a new account?

tell him to invent a password system to he can never forgot..

for example this site is overclockers

take the 1/3/5/7 letters of the name and add the year you were born to the end and your real firstname to the start

would be my password and i would always be able to remember what it was no matter the website, its different for every website and unlikely anyone would guess your system.

i do not use this system though so dont try to login as me with any wierd combination of letters...

all mine are wrote down in a diary so i never forget

Just thought I'd add.. If he's logging automatically his password can't have changed. So my money is on forgotten. ;)

Just send Steam support an email and they'll sort you out. :)

Love that. Invent elaborate passwords... then write them down. Beautiful.

i write mine down because i dont use a system :P ive got completely different passwords for every website :D

i'd gladly switch to a code system as it would make remembering them so much easier..

i dont know wether its firefox , the os or what but it seems to be once every year it will log me out of every website :(

pain in the bum as i can usually never remember the ocuk one and theres no simple forgot password link it says to contact an admin or some rubbish
