Click this: steam://purchase/79

If that doesn't work, then try reinstalling Steam, without deleting your game cache files though.

Firefox dont like it and interweb explorer gives me the same as before. will steam prompt me if i wanna keep my game cache files or will i need to do something else to keep them?

Try:
Start => Run => steam://purchase/79

Well, I'll suggest backing up your SteamApps folder in Steam, just in case it removes itself. Or try downloading steam and installing over the top of itself.

ok done that and its still not working! i click the purchase now buttons and it instantly displays the page not found page. windows firewall is disabled but i have added steam to the exceptions list anyway. it also does it when i try and download any trailers via steam.... this is very odd/annoying indeed!

Have a read through the Steam forums, there's probably a few people with the same problems.
found the problem! theres a fault with the latest patch or sumat. alls fixed cheers :)

The protocal steam uses isint properly registered with windows; meaning the command cant be directed to steam. If you search the steampowered forums; there is a thread on this problem. Some guy there described a fix and even went as far as making a little prog that performs the fix for you.
