i have 2 computers in the house. i would like to run my steam account on both.

what happens if i am running a steam game on pc1, and then someone (i.e. my young son) tries to launch a steam game on pc2?

i am fine with getting an error message and steam only letting me play on one pc at a time. BUT will this be all that happens? would i be in danger of my steam account (through which i have bought many games) getting banned?

thanks

Your son will have to open an account himself then re-purchase the codes for the games to be played on his account.

Like most log in things it won't let you run 2 occurences at once. As far as I'm aware.

In game you get an error that someone else has logged in on your account and you get kicked out of the game.

I highly doubt that, you have the same IP addy so I doubt they'd think you were sharing account or whatever...

I use my steam account on 2 pc's too ( well 1 pc and 1 lappy) and I just get logged off on my main pc if I go game on steam on my lappy...

it'll just say "you've been logged in from another location" i do it all the time, i have 3 machines with steam on in one house and two at another

steam will log you out when the other pc logs in, you wont get banned or anything providing none of the pc's has any cheats etc installed.

edit, wow beat twice while posting :p

i dont want to do that. i have many steam games which both my son and i play on.

im cool with this, being able to play at the same time would be piracy. what i want is that only 1 pc can be on steam at any time, but if a "mistake" is made, steam simply wont allow 2 occurrences at the same time rather than involving the piracy police and/or a ban.

In game you get an error that someone else has logged in on your account and you get kicked out of the game.

i think that answers my question. so to give you a (worse case) example i start playing tf2 on pc1. my son then launches tf2 on pc2. the consequence of this would be that i get kicked off tf2 on pc1, BUT my steam account will not get banned?

a number of replies made whilst i was composing my second posting. thanks :p

i think the general consensus is that ill be ok.

thanks again, but i will keep an eye on this thread just in-case anyone thinks different.

I just meant you can only run 1 account at a time, no ban if it happens. :) And if they contact you, you can just say you set it up for your son. (They'll never contact you:p)

Works fine for me, me and the missus log each other off all the time :p

I have a steam account and my Dad has one, and we use both accounts on 3 PC's at home, and his PC at work. Nothing major happens you just get kicked off whatever you're playing if someone else logs onto that account.

If you want to both play a game, at the same time, or together you need to get another steam account and repurchase the game in question.

couldnt you just put the other steam account into offline mode wont be able to play online games but single player you could?

not sure if it will work but its worth a try

this would be a "cheeky bonus" if it works. i may try it, but that wasnt my concern (i.e. im happy with only one pc running steam at once)

Yeah you can run on as many PCs as you want, just not at the same time, it'll just say someone else has signed in and ask if you want to exit or reconnect.

This is a feature of Steam that **** me off, I've got a load of games on Steam that I've paid good money for that only one can be used at a time. If I'd bought the CDs from a shop then they all could be used at the same time but with steam, only one

I hope you don't think you actually deserve the right to run multiple online instances?

I have Peggle on my steam list that my GF plays on her laptop. Theres no negative consequences if we both log on other than one of us being logged out, and plus my GF can play peggle offline so its not a big issue.

Though a point against steam (but I love steam anyway) If you bought all your games in the store, then you could run each of those games at the same time on different PCs, however with steam your limited to 1 PC.

No, what I was getting at was I've paid for Quake / Peggle /Audiosurf / Halflife (+ long list) so I should be able to play them on different machines at the same time.
