If you buy a game on Steam does it allow you to download it for free. For Example if I reinstall Windows can I redownload the games on a freshly installed system, or even a different computer.

Also if you buy games from a store that are also available on steam, does this allow you to link the game to steam using the CD key.

Thanks.

You can download games from Steam as many times as you like on any number of machines as you like, as long as you've bought the game on your account. This doesn't include Bioshock, which has limited activations.

As for your second question, yes you can link a shop-bought Steam game to your Steam account with the key.

Great and great, thanks for the fast answers.

One more question. If i install steam on my lappy, can I copy the contents of my steam dir across to save the download?
Anyone do this?

Have UFO: Afterlight and its a handy game to have for long train journeys if i got the lappy with me :)

You can use the Steam backup utility. It compresses the Steam game files you select to a single .exe file which you can burn to a CD/DVD/etc. then reinstall on your PC or another PC you run your Steam account on. :)

Just zap it over through your network or whatever and once you have Steam on the laptop you're good to go.
