Steam question!

Just a quick one:

If I were to buy Civilization 4 in the shops or order it off the internet, would I be able to activate it on my Steam account using the CD key?

I just ask because I like the convenience of having my games on Steam, but it seems to be cheaper to order this one on the internet that it is to buy it on Steam.

Steam is selling the complete Civ4 for around 13quid, another site for the hardcopy at under a tenner. My money goes to Valve as I can have my games under steam :)
 
I bought RO in the shops for a tenner or so last year, just built a new rig and went to re-install it but now its sitting on "My games" list, so I guess I could have installed it via Steam? I didn't try it but it would be handy to know if there's a system like that. It would make sense that once it has been activated it can be downloaded, but that would require the game to be either installed first via CD or paid for first...Not very handy the first time, but handy there-after.

Edit: Just seen the other guy ninja-posting above me ;) RO seems to be on that list so that would explain it.
