My friend has just bought a new PC and has installed steam and I have gifted him some games from my account. I was wondering if instead of him having to download all the games can I copy the files from my PC and put it on to his?

Would it just be a case of copying say the "battlefield bad company 2" folder from my steam folder into his?

Yep.

Copy the game files from within the "steamapps" directory, then the game folder from within the "steamapps\common" directory. Dump them into the same locations on his machine. Job done.

I always do this when i re-format, keep the folders backed up and transplant them into the right folder afterwards. Much quicker than downloading.

So the games don't actually have an account they are bound to?

I would have thought that the copies on your pc that you have would be tied to your account and he would have to download again to attach the gifted ones to his pc

Nope, otherwise you'd have to redownload the game if you logged into a different account on the same machine. :)

The game files aren't locked to any one account, but you still have to authenticate with an account that owns them to play. :)

Guess we will find out after work! Also wanting to copy HL2 for him as well. Do I copy all the files with "half-life 2 xxxx" plus all the "source" files?

Believe it or not, they are on the Mac version of Steam - the games install to the user area *facepalm*

You copy the folder of the game in question, but if it's a valve game there will be a few .gcf files in the steamapps folder that you need to copy too.

Note the size of some of the files here.

I put my old harddisk in as a slave into my new rig and done this, the only thing you have to do is copy the saved game files to my documents :-)

I'd recommend doing a "verify the integrity of game cache" on each game after copying them over in that manner in order to download any rogue files that may have been dotted around in other directories :D
